Clivia miniata Cape Town Series™
Add drama to the shade garden with the Clivia Cape Town Series™. Native to South Africa, they were named after Lady Charlotte Florentina Clive, Duchess of Northumberland. Lush year round green foliage of this perennial offsets brilliantly colored trumpet shaped blooms – bright oranges, apricots, peach, reds and yellows. The large flowers are held on sturdy stalks above the clump of strap-like leaves. Lasts long as cut flowers. Hearty in zones 9-11. Divide plants in spring.
Landscape Uses: Plant en masse or clumps under trees to soften and fill in landscapes. Tolerates root completion such as shallow-rooted palms. Suitable for potted plants on a shady patio.
Exposure: Full shade to part shade. Shelter from harsh summer sun. Need protection from frost or extreme cold.
Mature Size: 2-3 feet tall 1-2 feet wide
Bloom Period: Late winter, through spring,
Growing Tips: Water well in spring and summer but keep soil drier in autumn and winter. They require regular irrigation in the landscape or in containers. Dislikes constantly wet soil or roots. Fertilize in spring. Deadhead after flowering or leave seed heads which ripen the flowing winter, for a distinctive look.
Challenges: Not many. Likes well drained soil, no standing water on roots.
